Photon Energy Systems (PES) has announced the commissioning of a 3 Mw solar photovoltaic plant in Karnataka.

The plant has been set up for the Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. as a demonstration unit in the tail-end of the grid to strengthen the rural power supply to the areas of Itnal and Chikodi towns of Belgaum district. All the agricultural pumpsets in the area have access to reliable and affordable energy.

The solar energy from the power plant provides continues water supply during day time for agriculture as well in the area, a release from the company said. Set up in a span of 6 months on an area of 17 acres the plant has 13,000 modules. It has generated and fed 1.76 million units of solar power into the grid so far.

Do not concentrate on India alone. There is plenty of an opportunity in other countries,he said in a meeting. I hope India become a master of global energy. This should be our vision, he said after releasing the Indian Wind Atlas published by the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (CWET). Dr Abdullah said the Government and the industry should work together together to get rid of fossil fuel and give people clean energy from sun, water, wind and geo thermal. We must work harder to achieve this,he said.

The renewable energy sector, particularly solar energy, should now focus on technology and bringing down costs, said Dr Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy.

Addressing a seminar on mainstreaming green energy here on Thursday, he emphasised that the Government was keen on supporting the industry in viable ventures. But he cautioned the industry against bringing in "cheap technology". Go for better technology available with developed countries but also invest in R&D to ensure long-term growth. India needs excellence in renewable energy sector, he said.

On development of wind energy, he said the MNRE was now working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Forests to address the delays in getting clearances for setting up wind mills. The industry also needs to look at increasing the mast height, he said.
